Some details on the nest box:
The nest box is a standard off the shelf one and then modified
to accept cameras, lights & microphones. DIY construction details on
CorkNest.com
The box in mounted in a tree with cables running back to the house.
The nest box has 3 cameras: external, overhead & movable
close up side camera. The side camera can be moved when no adult bird is
in the box.
The sound comes from 2 microphones & preamplifiers mounted at nest level
- you can see one on the outside cam.. So all the archived
videos are in stereo - use headphones for best results.
The cameras feed back to a 4 channel security type video
recorder and then to a computer that uploads to uStream.tv. Three.ie or
O2 mobile broadband is used for tranmission. But at 2 frames per second
65MB/hour is used.
Daytime lighting is from ceiling mounted LEDS, this gives good colours.
It comes on approx 0900 and off around 2000. They are switched on by mains
timer plus a fault tolerent light dependant switch circuit to ensure the day
lights don't come on at night by accident :- the bird would fly out with disastrous
consequences.
Night time lighting is from infra red LEDs, they come on via mains timer
at 2030. The bird's can't see the IR light.
